Notes
for JANET WAUGH:
Nothing
known about the Waugh family. The
following received from Jim Robertson <jimjaar@ozemail.com.au> who
researches old mills in the area.
"The
caption under the photo of men loading a horse drawn cart outside a mill reads
- Waugh's Mill Avonbridge c 1910. - This mill which stood on the north bank of
the River Avon, between the river and Blackstone Road, was only one of a number
of mills in the village. It milled corn
and oats, and its owners J&A Waugh had a granary at Craigbank, nearby. The Waugh's other mill, known as New Mill,
dated from the ealy nineteenth century, and remained open until 1935.
The
Minutes of the Ogleface Friendly Society, for 5 Feb 1816 records the payment of
four shillings to James Waugh. This sits
amongst funeral expenses, annual allowances to widows, and whisky for a
Committee meeting and grease for the hearse wheels.
