THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO by
Denis Dighton |
This painting appeared in the June 1965 Volume of the Journal of the Society for Army
Historical Research to mark the 150th anniversary of the battle. I have reproduced it here
because it depicts the 7th Hussars; the regiment that the 2nd Viscount Guillamore,
Standish O'Grady distinguished himself in as a Lieutenant (
see biographies).
The Hussar brigades of General H. Vivian (Major-General, 7th Hussars) and Sir C. Grant
(Major-General, 15th Hussars) on the left of the picture are seen dashing in among broken
cavalry led by the Marquess of Anglesey. The Duke of
Wellington and staff are on the right of the picture. The observatory is seen in the
distance on the left, and La Belle Alliance on the right, in front of which Buonaparte and
his staff are seen.
