HISTORY OF SURNAMES
The following extracts are from Dr. George Fraser Black's The Surnames of Scotland, first published by the New York Public Library in 1946. I will not be extracting the details of all 8000 Scottish families included in this classic of genealogy but only those names with a connection to my own family tree. This could take some time and will follow no particular order unless someone out there mails me a request. If anyone would like me to look up name and add it to the list then I will gladly do so, but please be patient if I do not reply immediately - there is a wee bit of a backlog to catch up on.
Another set of books in my possesion is The Scottish Nation ; or the Surnames, Families, Literature, Honours, and Biographical History of the People of Scotland by William Anderson, published in 1870 in three volumes. Although dealing with famous individuals, there is often a section detailing the origin of the Surnames concerned. These entries are often much lengthier , but I will attempt - over the next few years - to publish them on this site.
