On Thomas's birth cert in 1855 its startes that Mary had had 8 children - 5 boys living, 1 boy dead and 2 girls alive.
Mary had 3 brothers and a sister living with her in the1851 census, Alexander Hay, coalminer aged 20, Ann Hay, a house servant aged 17, Thomas Hay a coalminer aged 15, Francis Hay a scholar aged 10. Ann was also living with her in 1861, unmarried
