Comment: I am looking for family names Cowan, Hardie,I am especially looking for my grandmother's half-sister's family. Her maiden name was Bethia Anderson Cowan, and she married James Gardner. They had five children named Lily (named after my grandmother Lillias Cowan Hardie, who later married Alexander Cockburn), and her mother. Annie, Christina ( who was named after her grandmother and her sister Christina Cowan who emigrated to NY in 1892).I cant't find the piece of paper with Bethia's other children on it. Her mother married my Great g.Father David Hardie and had my Grandmother Lillias Cowan Hardie, William Hardie and Jessie Hardie. We don't know who Bethia and Christina's real father was. My great g. parents lived with Bethia and her husband until they died.

Comment: I was pleased to see the LENATHEN surname as that is my fathers name. I have been trying to sort out his family tree. His fathers name was THOMAS LENATHEN, but that is as far back as I can get. Gdads mothers name was Catherine. She had 5 sons but can find no record of father anywhere. At some point she was a Governess and st another point she was known as MRS DOW as her partner was then JOHN DOW. This was all taking place in the Stirlingshire district.
I remeber being told that Granny DOW was put into the Asylum in her latter years. I am guessing that it was Bellsdyke. That is where she spent her last days and died some time in the 50s or 60s. It is said she came from Newcastle England, and in the family bible there is the name JAMES MCDERMOD under her name. No idea who he was.
I would like to Thank You Mr. Patterson for a very interesting site. All your hard work will not be for naught!
You are a very dedicated person and have made a difference to alot of people.

Comment: I just recently came across your wonderful site. I am descended from William Ure & Mary Bow who were both from Larbert. My mother Catherine Ure was born in Ayr were my grandfather had the Ure Iron Foundary. My g grandfather William Ure died in Larbert 19/4/1859. I have not been able to find when his wife, Christian Gray died. It was after 1841 but before 1851. Most of the Ure's living in Larbert (and also Denny and Falkirk) around this time were descendants of William & Mary. A lot of them were iron founders. Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Comment: Fantastic site from my point of view. My ancestors came from Slammanan, all coal miners. The information that I have gained from your site has probably saved me many months/years of work on the internet. Didn't realise that there were so many Penmans living in that area, and I understand that one of them was married to a Paterson, although I haven't been able to make the connection yet. Will just keep digging. Thanks again !

Nancy Spiers Dube in Norway, Maine, USA at 01:39:05 Wednesday November 23 2005
My grandfather was named David Speirs and my father reversed the "e" and the "i" when he was a small child, so I should be Nancy Speirs Dube. I have little hope of finding my Speirs ancestry. David was born in 1840 possibly near Jedburgh. He had a sister named M. Speirs who died in Ilkley, England in 1914. He had a cousin named William Speirs and that is all I know. David emigrated to the USA but I don't believe William did. My father said David seemed well-educated and had a great singing voice but no money.I had hoped to search through Scottish church records in September after attending the international Porteous reunion, but I was unable to go. If you are in Scotland and I go there next year, can you tell me where best to begin the search? I am not trying to show up on your front doorstep...I just want your advice. I actually wandered through a cemetery in Jedburgh 17 years ago but people there said Speirs was not a name common to that region. Oops. I just read what you said about spammers harvesting my address so I guess I will just have to be anonymous...when I am closer to arriving I will ask you for advice once again. Thanks for even the offer of help. I feel I know you...we must be relatives.

Margaret Agnes Ogilvie McCash in Cambridge,Ontario,Canada at 07:36:34 Wednesday August 31 2005
Hello Tom: A web site well done, full of excellant knowledge. My lineage takes me back to Falkirk. Ancestors John Bell Ogilvy(B:1794)married to Janet Grindlay(B:1799). They had ten children. Henry Ogilvy(B:15/4/1816),their sixth child, married Margaret Mowbray 26/10/1846 and their daughter Agnes Wilson Ogilvy was my Ggrandmother. It would be nice to think that Patrick Grindlay whom you mentioned, from 1648, was a ancestor of Janet Grindlay.I take great interest in the middle names that have been given to all of their children but one that puzzles me is Janet,s son Robert Colquohount Ogilvy(B:22/12/1821).Could this be one of his grandparents name? Regards: Margaret

Very interesting site you have here Tom. It is noted that you have innumerable entries for Airth Skinflats and Bothkennar. Try as I might, to no avail, cannot find any info on my two great grandfathers, Viz David Hardie who had a farm at Bellsdyke, Bothkennar, his daughter -Jessie Kincaid Hardie married my grandfather John Walls on 15/1/1873 at Airth. He was my greatgrandfather's son, whose name was Andrew Walls and who was married to Catherine Burns, who at one time lived at Orchard Head, Bothkennar. They were both ploughmen. Any info on any of these forbears would be more than welcome.

Very nice site, well done. One lineage we have become stuck on is Alexander Gillespie, b. 1810 in Scotland. He was married to Mary, b. 1806. They arrived in New York somtime around 1830 and settled initially in Seneca, N.Y. They later, 1840s, moved to Chicago, IL. They had 5 children: John, b. 1832 George Charles, b. 1834 Katherine, b. 1836 Margaret, b. 1838 Jennie, b. 1850 (born in IL, other siblings born in N.Y.) I would really appreciate help in finding my ancestors. Being in New Zealand it is hard to find info. Around 1825 in Denny was person, surname Miller, who grew up on a farm call "Hayfield Farm" (incidentally so was I, being named after this farm). He married Janet Henderson around the year 1850 as their only son John "Johnny" was born in 1851. When he was four his father died in a farm accident. Mother and son moved back to her village of Cumbernould. His mothers' sister (Anne, Mrs William Gillespie, was probably a mineral borer and John learnt the trade from him) helped rear John to aduldhood. [Anne, Mrs William Gillespie's daughter Mary married Mr R.{~Robert} Lithgow and they settled in New Zealand.] The street where John lived with his Aunt had been preserved along with many of the original cottages, but the actual house he lived in has been demolised. Janet Miller nee Henderson remarried a person named Gordon and there were two sons from this marriage called Alex and Jimmy who never married. They were able to catch rabbits in snares. John Miller was ~19 when he boarded the ship "Helenslee in ~1868 and travelled to New Zealand. Your help in any further information you could search out or seek help for would be gratefully appreciated. I don't even know the name of the street he lived on in Cumbernauld. Also can't go further back on the Miller or Henderson sides of the family trees.

Ian Hutton in West Sussex, England. at 13:29:43 Friday January 14 2005
I have recently discovered my great great great grandparents were Robert Hutton and Isabel Masterton. They were married on the 12th March 1826 in Larbert Parish. I have not yet ascertained how many children they had, but they did have William Hutton (my great great grandfather)who was born on the 25th August 1833. William married Maria Taggart in 1856 in Glasgow High Church district, they were both living in Calderbank, Lanarkshire, near Airdrie. After that all my relatives came from the Lanarkshire area. I could go forward to the present day but I don't wish to bore you. If anyone is connected to Robert Hutton or Isabel Masterton I would love to hear from you. Also if you have some other information I would be very interested in hearing from you too. Best wishes to you for the New Year. Kind Regards Ian.

According to the 1881 census they were residing in Haggs. Their three oldest children, Robert Sneddon, Margaret Taylor, and Jane were born in Denny, and Janet, Andrew and Alexander in Bothkennar. I have a marriage for John and Catherine on Aug. 30, 1853, but can find no further information on John or his siblings. Right off I see a couple of names that are of my origins in Slamannan,Taylor and Shanks. I am currently doing a lot of online research and have traced my history with these names to mid 1700's. Thank you. I have gone back to Henry Taylor and Jane Black but do not yet know the date of their marriage but have the marriage of their son William and his marriage to Agnes or Margaret Shanks, it seems she was named Margaret but was called Agnes and along to their son Henry and his marriage to Margaret Garvie and so on.

My great grandparents, Peter Barbour and Agnes Kerr arrived in Strathblane about 1848. They lived at Blanefield Cottages and he was a mechanic at the Calico printworks. They had 11 children; the last 7 being born in Strathblane. As they grew to working age the boys were imployed at the Calico Printworks. My grandfather James Rodger was the youngest, born 1862. The family is recorded in the 1861 census but after that I can't find them until they turned up in Liverpool and Bootle. If anyonehas any firther information and would appreciate hearing from them. Thank you for this opportunity.

My sister and I were at Edinburgh recently and went to The Read All About It exhibition and saw the cuttings regarding the Redding pit Disaster. My mum's family came from Redding and it was very interesting to read all about it. My gran and granpa grew up in the area before moving through to Stevenston where granpa worked for ICI. My dad was a miner in Newtongrange and a close family friend, Bob Pearson had a story in the book which was written about the pits. I find the internet a wondeful source of information.

I am searching for the grave of my ggg grandfather Archibald McKeich. Archibald McKeich was married to Mary Maclean in the parish of Campbeltown on 2 Jan 1812. He was a Cartwright of Kilchrist. Archibald and Mary's son James was born at Kilchrist on 14 Nov 1815. When James died in Australia his death records stated that he was from Drymen and that his father, Archibald, was a "Gentleman". Is Archibald buried in a cemetery in Drymen? His death must have been before 1855 since no official records can be located.

Tom,A most interesting site. Born in Bonnybridge and had to read your site to learn the history of Falkirk!! My late Granda Bell was a survivor of the Redding Pit, and lived in Westquarter and Redding all of his life. Now am trying to begin family history, and have a photocopy of a badly worn birth certificate of my Gf.William McRae Houston, born dec 25 1897 at looks like 10 upper ?street? stirling - to a William houston, cycle? mechanic who married ? McRae on June 2nd 1896, stirling. Presume there is only 1 parish register in stirling to try to find census records and I would have to look at 1901 census to try to find them regret do not have GG houston age/dob so am pretty stuck unless I know which direction I should go. Have also been told G/Father Houston was baptised in Logie church - are there records from there online. Any bits of info you can pass on would be greatly appreciated. There is very little info on my Houston family and alas even less family relatives around to try to find out anything. Again a most interesting and informative site about my birth area, will keep referring to yours Bill Houston

Would love to hear from anyone working on this. I descend from Archibald's daughter Helen (some times shown on public records as Ellen due to "silent" H.). Helen married Stinson. Her sisters in Canada married McGregor and Laird. The siblings left in Scotland married Sugden and Stevenson. (A nephew Sir Alexander Stevenson was Lord Provost of Edinburg. I have great photo.) I have several letters written from Scotland to Archibald 1870's. One from a Sudgen and one from son Tom describing death of son Archibald. Also a couple letters from Sir Alex to my great-grandmother. Will send copies to any interested descendants.

I am doing some family history for my cousin's wife in Scotland. Her grandfather was Thomas Alexander O'Grady Marlin born Calderhead, Lanark 1869. I have found that his mother was your Charlotte Balfour who married John Marlin. It does seem odd that he was given a middle name of O'Grady after the putitive father of his mother's sister's illegitimate son. As to the Geddes connection, I think that Catherine, whose previous name may have been Brand, (I don't know where Bartlett Taylor comes in) married John Geddes St Bride's Fleet Street 27 May 1812, they had at least 2 children Catherine born 1819, and Mary Ann Brand Geddes baptised 30 September 1821 St Clement Danes, Westminster, this could be Mary Taylor. Just thought I would share this with you, please let me know if you have any new information. Josie

Dear Tom Paterson, I am a book dealer in Edinburgh and am researching an item I have in stock. It is, I regret, a rather expensive item: a copy of Gordon's 'The British Angler,' published 1740. It bears the inscription: 'James Sim / Stirling / 1775.' The earliest James Sim I found in your listings had a reference date attached of 1787, I believe: an arable farmer at Bothkennar. To what, I wonder, does the 1787 refer? Would this be the same James Sim as in this book? Or one generation previous to him? Yours sincerely, Colin C. Hello Falkirk (from an ex bairn) Love your site. Anyone fancy helping with a Pringle puzzle? A relative of mine, Alexander Pringle , who wrote a book about the Pringles, also kept a scrapbook about his own immediate Pringle family. I have tried to follow up as many of the "clues" as I could - but the scrapbook doesn't tell me anything straightforwardly about my direct Pringle ancestry other than I already knew. That stops with Robert Pringle (joiner) and Isabella Purves , the latter died in Eccles 1856. An entry in the scrapbook says that the scrapbook's owner, Alexander Pringle( son of Alexander P and Ann McCall) was the third cousin of Thomas Pringle of Selkirk, now he was a son of James Pringle and Alison Sudden, this leads me to believe that "my" Robert Pringle ( Alexander's grandfather ) was the first cousin of John Pringle who married Catherine Dickson , and had children in Innerwick, then Duns(e). If anyone can help me link these cousins , I would be awfully grateful. cheers sally

Hi, I looked at your site as I was interested in Candie Pit area, Muiravonside. My maternal gt. grandmother Isabella Dixon was born there. Her father William Dixon was a miner at the pit from about 1882- 1893 when he died age 49 of pulmonary disease. His in-laws, Henry and Mary Ann McCawley also lived there. William came from England and in 1881 was working at Ferniegair pit in Lanarkshire. In 1870 the McCawleys (who had also came from England) were in Dalziel near Motherwell. I believe there are still McCawleys(poss. diff. spelling)and Dixons in the Polmont area. I found your site interesting and informative.

Hi I would like to thank who ever did all the hard work to produce this site. I have been able to find out about my Mums family, sadly she has passed away. I now know why she had Jenkins as a middle name and her sister had Milton. They were the names of her grandmothers. I have also found some ggrandparents named Robert Waugh and Janet Marshall who were married in Bothkennar on 31st December 1855. My grandfather was George Alexander Thomson and he married my grandmother Robina, they had two daughters My Mum Catherine and her sister Jean. If anyone out there is of the same family we would like to hear from you. My Mums sister had two children Peggy and Ian Tooley. We are a big family four boys and four girls. Bye for now and once again thank you.

My GGfather Robert Paterson came to Otago, New Zealand about 1860. He was from the farm Easter Barnego. Brothers John, Alex? and youngest William took over the farm, a bachelor, left it on trust for benefit of Denny Agricultural Society. Parents: William? Paterson and Catherine? Logan. I have fuller details which I will search out if there is an interested responder to this. Many descendants of Robert in NZ.

Looking for any other millree's out there. Apart from immediate family, of which there aren't many left, there seem to be few and far between. Must have been a name made up we think? Can trace it back about 1860 in Glasgow but believed to be french.

Hi Tom, my name is Victoria. I am trying to find more on my family history. The only name I have is Burrell, that is my grandma Lois's maiden name, her married name is Spittle. My great grandfather was partners with another man, they owned a butcher shop and I think my grandma said it was on Paradise Street West Bromwich. I know this is a long shot but if you have any information on the family I would greatly appreciate anything you have, or if you know anyone who may have information could you pass on my email address to them. I want so much to find more on my family history. Thank you for your time. Sincerly Victoria Meir

Hi Tom, Great Website. Will visit it again. Good to know the Patersons are spread around the globe. My great great grandfather was a william PATERSON, born in Scotland 1840/41. (That information is a little difficult to investigate further!) My earliest trace on him so far is the 1881 census, when he was a Police Constable in Maidstone Kent. He was married to Mary Ann CLEMENTS, and they had three children Mary Ann aged 17(my great grandmother), Annie C aged 16 and John B aged 14. By 1901 John was married to Elizabeth, and had two daughters Ethel aged 11 and Florence aged 9, and son William aged 4. John had a business for many years in Maidstone as a surgical appliance maker. My great grandmother married William HEALD in 1894 and they lived in Worksop Notts. They had a son William who was killed in action in WW1 and a daughter Annie, who married William Henry NEALE. They had just my father Thomas William Paterson NEALE, who has my brother Stuart Paterson, and me. Don't know if we are related, but maybe someone will recognise a connection.

My ancestor James Sneddon/Snaddon drowned in the River Avon near Slamannan in 1882. I have a copy of his death certificate but am trying to find out more - eg. did he jump or was he pushed? I couldn't find any report of the incident in the Falkirk Herald. Would there have have a coroner's inquest - and if so where would I find the records? Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks, Kirsty
