His mother Elizabeth Miller and Father Moses (In fornication) Buchanan (the miller at Arnprior). Question ,which Moses was he, quite a few could qualify, but not of the Arnprior family first names. Any one with a clue, possibly in the Miller family of Kippen genealogy.?

In meantime, here is my connection: my great-great grandfather was John Archibald Paterson (1827-1912) who was born in Scarborough, Ontario [now part of Toronto]. I can't find out who his father was, but believe he would have come from Scotland (Scarborough wasn't settled by Europeans until about 1795). any held would be appreciated. John Archibald married a Glendinning and I have found some sncestory on this side, but am still stuck in trying to link "Paterson" back to Scotland

James Paterson, DOB 05/07/1848, Glasgow

Married 12/12/1873, Glasgow to

Jane Weir, DOB 22/04/1853, Glasgow

James and Jane had a son (only child I know of), Walter Weir Paterson DOB 07/11/1881, Glasgow.

The family emigrated to Australia then on to New Zealand, I don't know date.

Walter is my Paternal Grandfather, James my Great Grandfather.

James died on 1/10/1910 and is buried at Waihi, New Zealand, a small town made famous (in NZ) for gold mining.

Jane went back to Australia and died about 1913, and is buried in Armadale.

Walter married on 22/08/1917 in Auckland, NZ to:
Ivy Pearl Wetherill (DOB 15/03/1896, Auckland, NZ.)

They had two children:

Neville Weir Paterson (DOB 21/06/1922, Auckland, NZ) - my father, and Daphne Pearl Paterson (my Aunty who never married, I don't have her DOB at present).

Walter died on 17/10/1960 at Auckland, NZ
Ivy died on 06/01/1975 at Auckland, NZ

My dad, Neville, married Jean Mirabel Stephen (DOB 10/02/1927, Wanganui, NZ) on 02/03/1946 at Palmerston North, NZ. They had four children.

Janice Elizabeth, DOB 11/12/1946, at Lower Hutt, NZ
Alan Stephen , DOB 28/02/1949 at Lower Hutt, NZ
Myself, Garry Neville, DOB 14/09/1951, at Lower Hutt, NZ
John William, DOB 24/10/1956 at Gisborne, NZ

Mum, Jean, died on 10/04/1996 at Lake Manapouri, Central Otago, NZ (Mum & Dad were on a "Golden Oldies" escorted trip around the South Island of NZ to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary).

Dad, Neville, died on 25/04/1999 at Tauranga, NZ.

I can fill you in with more details of the NZ connection if you would like.

Congratulations on a really interesting site especially to all those "Bairns" who are scattered across the globe.

Originally from Falkirk {Glenochil} like many Bairns I have travelled the world but always kept an interest in the old home town.

I am particularly interested in the Old Roxy Theatre - Carron Iron Works and my old school Comely Park - your old photographs are particulary interesting - Oh! by the way I am 79 years of age so I do have lots of memories of Old Falkirk.

Keep up the good work - this is a site I will list as a favourite

Cheers! Allan

Comment: Hi Tom,I've been doing some research on the quarter pit mine diaster and came across your great site. My great great grandfather was John Busby who was the foreman killed. As listed he had 5 children at the time of his death. However as noted in articles his wife gave birth to thier 6th child the day or two after the explosion. His name was Duncan Busby and he died in 1917. My grandfather was named Alexander Baxter Busby. He was born in 1888 and died in 1964. He had 3 children a boy, John Busby, ( my father who had no middle name), was born in 1913 and died in 1973. His other son Thomas Scott Busby was born in 1915 and died 2 yrs ago. He had a daughter named Beatrice. John Busby was my father and my name is Alexander John Busby. I have a son named Alexander Thomas Busby. In turn he has a son named Alexander James Busby. Two things I find very interesting is that no one in the family ever knew where the name Baxter was connected with my grandpa. After reading your info I see that the manager of the mine was named Alexander Baxter. Coincidental I do not think. Possibly he was a mentor or best friend, Lodge brother , etc, of my gr. gr. grandpa. as we are all Mason's. My grandpa might be named after him. My grandpa and grandma are buried in the old Denny cemetary. My gr. gr. grandma would not allow her children to work the mines so my grandpa, my dad, his brother and myself all became foundry moulders. The last little bit of info you might find interesting is that after the disaster the mine gave my gr. gr. grandma a small cottgage to live in until her death. It was situated up a hill behind the Denny kirk. Apparently many people walked up the hill after church for recreation. She would leave plates of her homemade bread and jam for the trekkers and became known as the "jelly piece granny up the hill" I would love to discuss this further with you if you so choose. Thank you very much, Alex

Looking through your census data I could find an Agnes Dunsmore working as a servant for James Waugh. There is a William Dickson farmers son. I was told growing up, my grandfather William Wilson was gassed during WW1 and while convalescing in England his nurse was my grandmother. After the war he wanted to marry her but her mother having lost a husband and elder son in the coal mines would only consent if he brought the family to Canada. I don't know if this is true but they widow and her children did come. It was very interesting to make a connection to the past.
Thank you for your efforts

However, at the request of my family I have spent the last two years researching a completely different family name and have just returned to the Speirs. You and I are victims of the affection the Speirs family feel for the name David. As I seek my David I honestly offer my services to you(free-that's all they're worth. Comment: Thank you. I am after the parents of my great grandmother Ann Chittick who went to Australia in 1886. Her parent were William and Elizabeth (morrison) Chittick. My info in scant in the Family bible - she was baptised in Kilsyth and there is a mention of Quaker, as well as parent names. I found them in your census results. I now would like to find out more info on them. I hope for success. Do these people fit in your family tree? I have the family of Ann in Australia if it is of interest.

I am descended from his son David. Would like to know of records that might establish his birth and his marriage or marriages. His oldest son is said to have been born 1798; the year of son David's birth is unknown but he and two siblings appear to have been born 1798-1816, followed by four siblings 1816-23, which suggests the possibility that Ann Marshall was a second wife (a different possibility is that John was in the army during some or all of 1798-1816 but that, too, I dont know how to establish.

Comment: I started out searching the various web sites to find out information on my mother's side of family (Mahaffey and Olwell (sometimes spelled Alwell). I was absolutely astonished when I found my dad's surname, Lauth (originally, I believed, spelled Louth) in the Scottish and Irish records.

According to what I've found, my dad's ancestor was beheaded by Oliver Cromwell and the entire family fled to Germany. I can only presume the information about once having been Irish or Scottish was not talked about in Germany out of fear of retaliation from Lord Cromwell. By the time Lord Cromwell had passed away, no one probably remember the history.

Can you help me find out more about my mother's or dad's history in Ireland or Scotland,

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

Comment: As a Whitecross lad I was interested in the BBC article on the rare orchids found on Almond bing. It refered to Muiravonside Colliery being close at hand. News to me given that I had covered all that area and my grandparents lived at Causewayend insight of the Almond bing. So I started searching for Muiravonside Colliery. I knew the limekilns and old coal working on the Muiravonside Estate, now the Country Park but could not place a name to the coal workings. Anyway the search led me to this site and in conjuction with 6" scale maps I found Muiravonside Colliery. I am amazed at the wealth of knowledge on this site. I have spent hours scanning the site and enjoyed every minute.

Comment: I had been researching the Fowlers from Slamannan,My grandmother, Clementina, was born there in 1863, and came upon your site when searching anything to do with that village.Up to that point there seemed little information available. Suddenly I was faced with a massive amount of material on the Fowlers through the census for 1881. I just could not believe my luck. This has resulted in a tremendous improvement to my family tree. Please accept my heartfelt thanks. How easy would research be if there were more people like you out there! Have recommended you to all my correspondents. Keep up the good work.

Comment: I have traced my GGGG Parents to marriage in 1792 at Muiravonside, namely William Tulloch & Susan Alexander. I have found Susan's Parents but have not been able to confirm John's. I have a hunch he may have come to Polmont area from North Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands. Going by the traditional method of naming offspring his Father would be John & his Mother Christian. Using the I.G.I.the only likely
match is "John Tulloch & Christian Tulloch" who had a son William born 1765 in North Ronaldsay. What I am trying to
establish is if there are any records which mention William's place of birth, eg tombstone, church records, farm
records, rent records or other miscellaneous local records.
He was living in Bennetstown at the time of his son John's
baptism at Muiravonside Church. Any help or suggestions will
be appreciated. Bob Tulloch (aged 76)

We have a handwritten history of births, marriages and deaths going back to 1793. Some of this was when the Antiburghers went to America but returned again to Leith, from where Grandad originated.

The Christian Bookshop in Edinburgh have heard of one name in the history, i.e. Rev. Andrew Smart.

Recently retired, it is my intention to go as far back as possible but the above is all I know at present.

Comment: I am a great great grandson of William MacFarlane (mentioned as 47yrs old in the 1881 census for Slamannan).I understand that he was born at Wester Auchine (?) Slamannan, I wonder if you can verify the location of this farm? He married in Airdrie, and his son Thomas, my great grandfather, was born at Carserigg (now known as Crossrig). The family then moved to Brownrigg farm (nr Meadowfield) and at the time of the 1881 census, he was farming at Tods Bughts. My great grandfather married and the first farm he took on was Greenhill. The Watts I think were then in Tods Bughts as one of them was a great pal of my great grandfather and indeed was his best man. Great grandpa then moved to Easter Glentore farm, where my granny was born and finally moved to Glenhove, Luggiebank, where he died of pneumonia in 1925. His father retired and built Brownrigg Cottage in Slamannan, which I have yet to see. He remarried after losing his first wife and died round about 1910.

My grandfather on my mother's side was born and raised at Roughrigg where his father was an engine driver on the Monklands railway. One of grandpa's sisters, Lizzie, lived in Slamannan till her last years and another, Jeanie, continued to live at Bankier Place, Roughrigg (house now restored)until her final days. I have really happy memories of visiting Roughrigg and Slamannan in the 1970s and early 80s, with my mum and brothers - we were fed and fed and fed till we were liken to burst, all the nice things kids get when they visit relatives at weekends. Although none of them had palatial living quarters, they had all the love and warmth which I still feel now and their kindnesses are still remembered by me, I only wish I had the knowledge to ask them things; my grandfather remembered coming home with his father one Friday night to Roughrigg (probably during or just after the great war) and hearing drunken men lying in the fields singing away - quite comical I think he'd have found it!

Memories are things to be cherished and I hope this input has shown how valuable sites such as these are for recording past events.

Comment: Thanks for all the work that has gone into the site! All of us obsessed family history nuts know how painstaking it is. (shame about the blatant chinese advertising **** that has sneaked in as a signee in the Guest Book)
My grandmother worked as a nurse in a Larbert Hospital-we have a photo of her in her uniform, probably in her 20's, around 1915??? She was born in Larkhall, but her family, Reid, seem to travel around a bit-her father came from Forfars.
If anyone has any info about the Hospital-we believe was classed as an Asylum, but you weren't necessarily mad, if you get my drift! We would love to know how she ended up there before marrying a sassanach!
Cheers!

Comment: I happened to be looking at some history and found your site. It has been many years since I have been back to Airth, but Nanna still lives in Netherby Road. I still remember our holidays; the General Store she and my Poppa ran on Carronshore Rd, the men who came in for their lunches, the delivery of Iron Brew and even before that, spending one of our first Christamses at their home on Grangemouth Road. My brother and I only visted our Grandparents once a year, but what a time we had! Especially when they lived at South Lodge, at the gates of Airth Castle. We had bikes and rode up to the Castle, fished for flounder and what ever else in the birn. We fell in a few times, much to the disgust of my Grandmother!
One of my Poppa's brother and his wife, Uncle John and Aunt Bella lived on the High Street and we rode there often to visit, riding past the Castle or Mr Hunter "The Game Keeper" on the way! I remember one time we decided to climb into the Castle orchard..what a mistake that was! I'm sure Mr Hunter raised his shotgun to shoot, but only when he realised it was us, did he lower it! I hope so anyway!
There was Uncle Begbie and Aunt Ellen, Uncle Aiken and his wife, Aunty Mary, Uncle Francis and Aunty Isobel, all relatives we visited when we went 'home' I also remember the "Chipper" who came around every night. We'd run out and get the Black Pudding suppers for Dad and Poppa and chips for the rest of us!
I think I've said enough! Thank you for the opportunity to relive some good memories!
I'll be back very soon!

We have no other information to go on, if anyone knows of an Elliott family born living in Stow around 1911, any information would be very much appreciated - if anyone has info on a John Elliot born 14th June 1911 Stow, this would help to locate his parents.
Apart from the above, we no nothing else about the Elliot family from Stow.

They were the "Grahams of Tamrawer and Auchencloich"; and sold the land in 1772 to the Carron Company. This information is from "The Grahams of Tamrawer and Auchencloich..."( I'll spare you the rest of the title), by John St. John Noble Graham. I'm hoping for more history about the area, and also hoping to visit that area in person.
